How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies Overnight (Traps That Actually Work)

What you'll need

• Apple cider vinegar
• Dish soap
• Small bowls or jars
• Plastic wrap + rubber band (optional)

Trap 1 — Vinegar bowl (fastest)

1. Add 2 drops of dish soap — this breaks the surface tension so flies sink instead of landing.
2. Leave it uncovered near the fruit bowl or sink.
3. By morning, it'll be full. Empty and repeat for 2–3 nights.

Trap 2 — Jar + plastic wrap

1. Put overripe fruit in a jar.
2. Cover tightly with plastic wrap, poke small holes with a toothpick.
3. Flies get in, can't get out.

The step everyone forgets — clean the drain

If flies keep coming back, they're breeding in your sink drain. Food residue coats the pipe walls just below the surface.

1. Pour a kettle of hot water down the drain.
2. Add ½ cup baking soda, then 1 cup vinegar.
3. Wait 10 minutes, flush with more hot water.

Do this once and repeat infestations usually stop completely.

• Fruit in the fridge during warm weather
• Take trash/compost out nightly
